Ahead of Martin Luther King Jr. day, Central Park Conservancy historian Marie Warsh gave a guided tour of Seneca Village, a community of the first black property owners in New York.
Accounts say that the community thrived until the 1850's, when the land was cleared for the planning and construction of Central Park. In the end, close to 1,400 landowners lost their property, with many artifacts of their history still being discovered to this day.
In celebration of Black History Month, the Conservancy will debut an updated Seneca Village tour on MLK Jr. Day and on additional dates in February.
