Jun 3rd, 2026 - A recent feature from Discover Wildlife makes the case that Central Park is far more biodiverse than most visitors realize. A 2013 survey tallied 571 species across the park's meadows, forests, lakes, and ponds, and more than 303 bird species have been recorded there over time.
The piece highlights seven animals worth looking for: red-eared slider turtles (one of five turtle species in Turtle Pond), coyotes, red-tailed hawks, eastern grey squirrels, Virginia opossums, eastern chipmunks, and raccoons. A pair of coyotes nicknamed Romeo and Juliet have been spotted regularly near Delacorte Theater. The park's squirrel population was counted at roughly 2,373 eastern greys in the 2019 Squirrel Census.
