A group of 12 diverse New Yorkers came together this Friday for a volunteer training to become members of the newly formed Squirrel Squad. The mission of this elite group is to rescue injured animals, particularly squirrels, and nurse them back to health.
One of their first patients was "Dorothy", an abandoned baby squirrel found in Central Park. She was ushered on to New York City's only wildlife rehab center, the Wild Bird Fund. She is expected to be released back into the park in as little as three weeks.
In addition to the medical care they offer, squadrons are charged advocating for squirrel recsue.
