Just last week, CentralPark.com reported that the brewing controversy regarding the proposed inflatable bubbles over the Central Park Tennis Courts was coming to a head.
And now a verdict has been reached. According to the NY Post, the Parks Department just confirmed that the agency is "no longer considering the current proposals." However, that doesn't mean that the department will not think about other options in the future that will allow the 26 clay tennis courts, which are currently only utilized in the warmer seasons, to be opened year round.
The Parks Department did not say specifically why it has rejected the plan, which called for a private contractor and would exponentially increase winter fees up nearly 10 times higher than the standard $100 season pass from March to November. However, it is speculated that the strong community and political aversion to the bubbles might have something to do with the decision.
