The Fountain Cafe was not about fancy food, it served sandwiches and salads, iced coffee, beer and wine. Facing the Lady of the Waters statue, it was about ambience and it's beautiful surroundings. In September of 1966, The New Yorker magazine described the look and tone of typical lunch goers - young, married woman friends who spent their morning shopping at Saks, and groups of business men with their attache cases eating roast beef sandwiches.
Budget cuts during the fiscal crisis in the 70's eventually led to the cafe be closed down in 1974.
