May 12th, 2025 - Filmmaker Lynn Novick is directing and producing a new three-part documentary series on the history of Central Park for PBS, set to air in 2028.
Known for her acclaimed historical documentaries, Novick will explore the park’s social and cultural evolution from its 19th-century origins as a public space to provide a peaceful refuge for all city residents, through 20th-century controversies and near decline during the 1970s fiscal crisis, to its current status as a cherished urban oasis.
The series will combine archival materials with vivid cinematography to highlight Central Park’s landscape and its role for New Yorkers.
The film will also examine conflicts over park access, commercialization, and preservation efforts, notably the work of the Central Park Conservancy.
Funded by The Better Angels Society, the project aims to deepen understanding of public spaces and their significance in urban life.
