A tiny Canadian Saw-whet owl was nursed back to health at a wildlife rehabilitation center and released into Central Park. The owl, nicknamed Owl Jolson after a cartoon character, was turned into the Parks Department’s headquarters in a shoebox by a man who found him in Sea Gate, Brooklyn. The man’s words, “Here’s an owl.”
It took two months of care at a Long Island shelter to help Jolson recuperate from head trauma, a droopy wing and some inflammation.
The species is native to Canada, but migrates south during the winter. The owls grow to only seven or eight inches, are androgynous and mainly eat deer mice in two meals.
