July 24, 2023 - Following the passing of the legendary crooner from Queens, Tony Bennett, a touching tribute has emerged in Central Park. A park bench located on Center Drive near Central Park South and West 59th Street, dedicated to Bennett on his 95th birthday in 2021, has now been transformed into a beautiful memorial. The initiative was taken by New York City carriage drivers and other park-goers to pay their respects.
Embraced by bouquets of flowers and a cherished photograph of Bennett sitting on the very bench with his beloved dog, the memorial speaks volumes about the impact the singer had on people's lives. A heartfelt note left by an admirer reads, "Please, Tony, once around the Park again," cleverly playing on Bennett's 1953 song, "Please Driver (Once Around the Park Again)."
Tony Bennett's presence will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who visit Central Park and find solace on the bench bearing his name, ensuring that his memory and music live on.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. called for Bennett’s birthday, Aug. 3, to be known as “Tony Bennett Day.”
