The Wall Street Journal reports on Elizabeth Barlow Rogers, who served as Central Park’s first administrator and founding president of the Central Park Conservancy. The landscape designer is the author of a new book, ‘Green Metropolis: The Extraordinary Landscapes of New York City as Nature, History, and Design.’
Ralph Gardner Jr, reports that she was the first Central Park Administrator, from 1979 to 1996, and founding president of the Central Park Conservancy in 1980. So she’s arguably as responsible as anybody for the park’s current glory. However she demurred, giving the credit first and foremost to the park’s designers, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, and then to Douglas Blonsky, her successor and the current Central Park Administrator.
The author of the article along with Ms. Rogers took a stroll from the 81st and Central Park West entrance to the ramble, that has been undergoing some major restoration. The Ramble is the subject of one of the chapters in her new book, “Green Metropolis” (Knopf). There she highlights seven remarkable green spaces around the city.
