Experience the magic of the holidays all season long at Harlem Meer.
Each year, Central Park transforms the Harlem Meer into a luminous winter scene with a flotilla of illuminated trees floating on the water, turning the area into a quiet, sparkling landmark you can visit throughout the holiday season.
The Annual Holiday Lighting Event
This family-friendly event kicks off the holiday season with a lighting celebration on the plaza overlooking the Meer. Visitors gather to see the trees "set sail" in lights for the first time each year. The event celebrates the spirit of the season with a heartwarming evening where guests can:
- Join caroling on the plaza, singing under the stars while enjoying hot chocolate and cookies (while supplies last).
- Meet Santa for a festive photo and a quick holiday chat.
- Watch festive surprises, such as live ice-carving demonstrations or other seasonal activities that vary year to year.
- See the Dana Discovery Center light up in a cheerful, “Griswold-style” display that anchors the scene.
The highlight of the celebration is the moment the flotilla comes to life. As the evening builds, the lights on the trees are switched on and a flotilla of illuminated Christmas trees glides out across the Harlem Meer. From the plaza and shoreline, you can watch the trees drift and shimmer on the water. It's a uniquely peaceful and enchanting holiday spectacle.
Visit this year's event page for more information, when announced.
Visiting the Flotilla All Season
You don’t have to attend the kickoff to enjoy the flotilla. Once lit, the floating trees and surrounding lights remain on display throughout the holiday season, making the Harlem Meer a beautiful destination for an evening walk, quiet reflection, or a seasonal photo stop.
