The flowering crabapple is a member of the Malus family. It is distinctive because of its firm red fruits and delicate flowers, which range in color from white to red. The small trees yield blooms in late spring and fruit from the summer into the late fall. The Conservatory Garden's flowering crabapple trees are over 30 feet in height, and are among the oldest trees in the Garden. Though the fruits are not appropriate for human consumption, they are vital to the insects, birds, and small animals that live in the Park.
