Hollyhocks, sometimes called alcaea, are a member of the Malvaceae family of flowers. This perennial can be found throughout Europe, Asia, parts of Africa, and the United States. They are most vibrant in the spring, summer, and fall, making them one of the longest blooming flowers in the Conservatory Garden. Bloom colors typically include purple, pink, orange, yellow, and white. They require full sun and well-drained soil to strive. In the Conservatory Garden, hollyhocks are a vibrant fuchsia and can be recognized by their large, full petals. Because they grow as high as 60 inches tall, they are among the most prominent of the Garden's flowers.
