The Japanese anemone can be found on the southern border of the Conservatory Garden. Its delicate pink bloom and startling orange center stand out when it blooms in the early summer and throughout the fall. Unlike other types of anemones, the Japanese anemone is fairly tall. The thin, wiry stems of this plant can grow up to 3 feet off the ground. This strong and persistent plant can survive in a variety of conditions, so it is remarkable both for its beauty and its hardiness. The Japanese anemone, whose name means daughter of the wind, is part of Ranunculacaeae family. When it appears in Central Park, it is a sure sign that fall is on the way.
