This appealing plant is a member of the Paeoniaceae family. These perennial flowers are distinctive because of their lush, multilayered shape. They can be found in a huge variety of colors, including cream, pink, red, coral, white, yellow, black, and ivory. Peonies can tolerate cold weather well, making them a natural addition to the Conservatory Garden. Since cold weather is a requirement to produce the peonies' delicate blooms, they are usually most prolific after a harsh winter. In Central Park, peonies bloom most markedly in June, and continue throughout the summer and into the fall. The delicate scent of the peony makes this flower a favorite in the Park.
