Basketball Courts
Enjoy a game of basketball in the heart of Central Park.
Central Park has options for basketball players of all skill levels and preferences. Whether you're looking for a casual game or a more competitive atmosphere, here's how to enjoy shooting hoops in the city's green oasis.
Where to Play
Great Lawn
Northeast of the Great Lawn there are basketball courts alongside other recreational facilities. The space provides basketball courts with nets and convenient access to water fountains. There are also plenty of picnic spots nearby to ensure you can find a place rest and relax after a game.
North Meadow Recreation Center
Currently closed until spring 2025.
Located mid-park at 97th Street, the North Meadow Recreation Center is a hub for basketball and other sports activities hosted throughout the North Meadow's 23-acres. While the center is currently undergoing renovations until spring of 2025, the updated space will feature resurfaced basketball courts and equipment rental services (photo ID required). Field kits for rent include basketballs, baseballs, baseball bats, jump ropes, and frisbees. Nets are also supplied.
Even if you don’t have someone to play with, you should stop by North Meadow. Thanks to the spot’s popularity, there is always an abundance of other players available for a game.
What to Bring
For games at Great Lawn, remember to bring your own ball. North Meadow Recreation Center rents them out (photo ID required).
Permits
Basketball courts are free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis for informal play. However, if you're part of an organized group or want to secure a specific court at a particular time, you'll need to obtain a permit.
You can check the field and court permit availability map for more information.
Permits are necessary for tournaments and special events to ensure fair access and organization.
