Chess and checkers have long been a cherished tradition in Central Park. Scattered throughout the park are tables designed for casual play, with some featuring pre-imprinted chess boards.
At the heart of this tradition is the Chess & Checkers House, newly restored in 2023. This octagonal, brick pavilion provides an inviting spot to play, complete with 24 shaded outdoor tables beneath a wooden trellis. Visitors can borrow chess, checkers, dominoes, and backgammon pieces free of charge during staffed hours.
Throughout the summer on select weekends, players of all ages can learn from grandmaster chess players in the Conservancy’s popular Chess Lecture & Simul Series. These free events feature lessons on strategy and simultaneous matches where up to 30 players can test their skills against experts.
Players are also welcome to bring their own boards and pieces to enjoy a game anywhere in the park—but be sure to bring pieces sturdy enough to withstand the wind!
