The Harlem Meer is a tranquil oasis in Central Park.
Named after the Dutch word for "lake", the Meer is an 11-acre body of water located in the northeast corner of Central Park, north of Conservatory Garden and east of the North Woods.
The Meer’s banks are adorned with diverse trees, including ginkgo, cypress, black locust, oak, and beech. In spring, vibrant roses bloom, while summer brings hydrangeas starting in late May. Visitors strolling the path from the cove to the water’s edge may spot local wildlife, including muskrats and the occasional black-crowned night heron.
Nearby, explore historic Fort Clinton and Nutter’s Battery, remnants of War of 1812 defenses.
Harlem Meer offers many activities for all ages, including catch-and-release fishing and two children’s playgrounds. The nearby Davis Center recreational facility also features ice skating, swimming, wellness activities, and more.
Every summer, the Harlem Meer Performance Festival brings live music and dance performances to the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center.
